Title:

Information for Innovation: Building better channels for knowledge exchange in environmental sciences

Where:

London, United Kingdom

Start Date:

Friday 28th September

Description:

Friday 28 September 2012 from 10:30 to 16:00

London, United Kingdom

What is lost in translation between the researcher and the innovator? Is information access a barrier to innovation in environmental sciences? This free one-day workshop will take a look at how knowledge exchange happens within the environmental sector. It will look at the medium and the message, identifying barriers to the flow of information, and examining ways in which knowledge exchange is facilitated in different parts of the environmental sector. The workshop will develop case studies of good practice and identify ways to achieve a more joined-up landscape for environmental science information.

Morning speakers include:

• Welcome from Maja Maricevic, Head of Higher Education at The British Library

• Colin Drummond OBE, Chief Executive of Viridor Waste Limited, Chairman of the Environmental Sustainability Knowledge Transfer Network

• Fergus Harradence, Deputy Director for Innovation Policy, Department for Business Innovation and Skills

• Dr Phil Clare, Oxford University Knowledge and Technology Transfer

Breakout workshop sessions in the afternoon will cover six industry areas:

  • new waste solutions,
  • renewable energy,
  • water management,
  • resource efficiency,
  • ecosystems services,
  • and flooding.

Participants will gain insights into the knowledge exchange process, how they might navigate the gaps in the landscape and take advantage of the opportunities that are available to them. They will provide input through workshop sessions to generate an action plan directed towards major environmental science stakeholders and policymakers.
