Coffee – Coffea arabica and C. canephora - is grown in more than 10 million hectares in over 80 developing countries, and is one of the world’s most valuable export crops. Approximately 20 million families – equivalent to ca. 100 million people - depend on coffee growing for their subsistence. The presentation will introduce various aspects of the coffee trade, including its dissemination from Africa, the early botanical literature, coffee houses, historical figures that loved coffee, and coffee growing, harvesting, and processing.

The lecture will be presented by Fernando E. Vega, FLS, who is working on an illustrated book presenting the history of coffee.

Tea and a selection of coffees will be served in the Library from 5.30pm and the lecture will be followed by a wine reception. This meeting is free and open to all; registration is not necessary.
